Evansville Otters News Release
Brian Shartzer pitched two scoreless innings and also delivered the game winning hit in the bottom of the 14th inning as the Evansville Otters beat the Kalamazoo Kings 6-5.
The Kings scored a run in the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Otters came back with two in the bottom half to take a 2-1 edge.
After Kalamazoo scored three runs in the fourth on two singles a walk and another single, it spelled the end for Brian Kroll who went just three innings.
The Otters came back with three in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead taking advantage of two Kalamazoo errors. However the Kings scored the tying runs in the eighth to make it 5-5.
Evansville had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth and sent up Trask Munoz and Jason Mann as pinch hitters. Both struck out and Rickey Clinton, who had been the Otters DH, came in to catch as Jeff Goldbach went to left. The move meant that the Otters lost their designated hitter and the pitcher would have to bat.
The game remained tied into the 14th inning when Beau Blacken led off with a walk. After Clinton sacrificed Blacken to second, Brian McKenna was intentionally walked. Munoz struck out bringing Shartzer to the plate. On a 3-2 pitch, Shartzer lined a ball over the head of Daryl Blaze in center to score Blacken with the winning run.
To round out the outstanding day for Shartzer, he pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
The Kings and Otters now have a very short turnaround as the two teams will play a day game tomorrow. The game is set for 12:05 p.m.
