Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - Seth Loman's three-run home run in the third inning snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled the Dash to a 6-3 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats at City Stadium on Friday night. Winston won the first of a three-game series and moved to 4-1 on its seven-game road trip.
Lynchburg (15-20) scored the game's first run against Stephen Sauer in the first inning. With two outs and men on first and second, Alex Buchholz singled to left to score Devin Mesoraco. Neftali Soto also tried to score, but was thrown out on a relay from Eduardo Escobar to end the inning.
After two scoreless frames, the Dash (24-11) got to Mark Serrano (2-1) in the third. Drew Garcia led off with a walk and made it to second base on a wild pitch when Justin Greene struck out. With Brandon Short at the plate, Serrano tried to pick off Garcia at second base. Garcia got back safely, but injured his right leg on the play when he awkwardly attempted to get back to the bag and had to leave the game. Kyle Shelton came in to run for Garcia.
Short struck out, but another wild pitch allowed him to reach base. When Mesoraco recovered the ball on the wild pitch, he threw down to second as the Hillcats tried to catch Shelton in a rundown. Shelton ran to third and would have been out had the throw to there not been dropped by Buchholz. The error put men on second and third with one out.
Eduardo Escobar drove in Shelton with an RBI groundout to second base to tie the game at one. After Jon Gilmore singled, Loman launched his league-leading tenth home run of the season to right field. The three-run shot broke the tie and gave the Dash a 4-1 lead.
The Hillcats got one of those runs back against Sauer (3-1) on a solo home run by Kyle Day to make it 4-2.
Winston-Salem added to its lead in the fifth inning against a tiring Serrano. With two on and one out, Ozzie Lewis drilled a double to right-center to clear the bases and give the Dash a 6-2 lead.
Lynchburg scored again in the bottom of the inning on Mesoraco's RBI single to cut the Dash advantage to three.
Winston got solid relief from Charlis Burdie, who worked two scoreless innings.
The Hillcats' biggest threat came in the eighth inning. Santos Rodriguez came on to start the inning and got a strikeout, but walked the next two batters to bring the tying run to the plate. Joe McEwing then called upon Dan Remenowsky to get out of the jam.
Remenowsky threw a wild pitch to pinch-hitter Kevyn Feiner to advance both runners into scoring position. But the right-hander from Cincinnati bounced back to strike out Feiner and got Miguel Rojas on a fly ball to right field to end the inning.
He pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fourth save.
Sauer picked up his second straight win with five innings of nine-hit, three-run ball. Serrano was served his first loss, allowing six runs (two earned) in five innings.
Gilmore went 2 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. It is his second-longest hitting streak of the season. He hit in 15 games in a row last month.
The Dash goes for its third straight series victory tomorrow night against the Hillcats. LHP Justin Edwards (4-2, 1.88) opposes LHP Matt Fairel (3-0, 3.55). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Fans can tune into the live audio broadcast beginning at 5:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Monday night when it starts a seven game home stand against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
