Potomac Nationals News Release
The Blue Rocks Alex Caldera outdueled P-Nats starter Pat Lehman as Wilmington defeated Potomac 2-0. Caldera picked up the win, setting new career highs in innings with 7 2/3 and strikeouts with 11. He scattered five hits over his start. Wilmington's victory ties them with Potomac for third in the Carolina League Southern Division with records of 15-20.
The only runs of the game came off the bat of Blue Rocks third baseman Jamie Romak who delivered a two-run homer in the fourth. He drove in Salvador Perez who reached with one out on a hit pitch. After Lehman struck out Jamar Walton looking, Romak took an inside changeup and pounded it just fair down the left field line.
Potomac's only inning with multiple baserunners against Caldera came in the second. Bill Rhinehart started out with a single and Tyler Moore hit a bloop single. However, Rhinehart was gunned down by Adrian Ortiz at third and Moore was stranded at first after consecutive strikeouts from Tim Pahuta and Robby Jacobsen.
Outside of the Romak homer, Lehman was smooth sailing. He became the first Potomac starter to reach the seventh inning this season. He finished the inning and ended up with seven strikeouts, four hits and only one walk in addition to his two earned runs.
The Blue Rocks loaded the bases in the ninth against Cole Kimball but the Potomac closer got out of the jam.
Potomac had a chance in the ninth, getting back-to-back leadoff doubles from Edgardo Baez and Derek Norris. But Mike Burgess and Bill Rhinehart both struck out. Tyler Moore smoked a ball but it was hit right at Patrick Norris in medium center and the game was over.
Caldera got the win improving to 2-2 while Pat Lehman took the tough-luck loss, falling to 1-1. Buddy Baumann picked his second save of the season.
The Blue Rocks and Nationals go at it again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Make sure to come out for Saturday Night Fireworks as Marcos Frias (1-2, 4.70 in 7 starts) faces Manauris Baez (1-1, 4.10 in 7 games including 1 start).
