Loggers Out-Slug Kingfish in Series Finale
July 4, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Kenosha Kingfish News Release
La Crosse, WI - The Kingfish and Loggers took part in one of America's oldest athletic traditions: baseball on Independence Day. The day went the way of the Loggers, however, as the Kingfish fell 13-10 in La Crosse.
Callahan Brown took the mound for the Kingfish and had a tough time, surrendering seven runs in two innings of work. Andrew Zapata, who made his first appearance after suffering an injury three weeks prior in the season, relieved Brown in the third. Zapata shook off the rust and pitched three innings, letting up two runs off of seven hits as he fanned four different Loggers. Shea Murray was brought in for his second appearance of the season and allowed 3 ER in 2.2 IP while walking three and striking out three. Brett Shimanovsky recorded the final out for the Kingfish by picking off Ronnie Gideon, to finish the day for Kingfish pitching.
The offense, even in defeat, stole the show. Eric Filia picked up an RBI single to put the Kingfish on the board in the first, and then Brody Westmoreland tacked on a second run in the second frame via a sacrifice fly. Two more runs came home in the third for the Kingfish as a Logger throwing error brought home Zack Weigel and Eric Filia.
The Kingfish bats made their presence truly known in the sixth frame when they scored five runs to tie the game 9-9. Alex Borglin brought home Jeremy Vasquez with a sacrifice fly, then Pat McInerney came home via a balk. Grayson Byrd completed the sixth inning rally with a three run blast over the right field wall. The Kingfish, in the end, still fell a little short by a final score of 13-10.
Eric Filia paced Kingfish hitting, going 3-5 with an RBI. Grayson Byrd went 2-4 with 3 RBI and Jason Scholl had a 2-2 performance while picking up two walks. The Kingfish will play the Loggers again tomorrow back in Kenosha for a two game series. Tomorrow's game begins at 6:05 CT.
