Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
SALEM, VA - Myrtle Beach Pelicans starter Jeff Locke was unhittable through the first six innings Saturday night at Salem Memorial Ballpark, but the Salem Red Sox still prevailed with a walk-off win in the ninth 3-2.
Again it was the Pelicans who struck first with a run in the top of the second on a solo home run by Freddie Freeman, his third of the year, off Salem starter Eammon Portice. The score would stay 1-0 until the Birds added a run in the top of the sixth. Cole Miles doubled to start the inning, then scored with on a sacrifice fly by Jason Heyward which put the Pelicans ahead 2-0.
Salem started to fight back in the bottom of the seventh, finally breaking through against lefty Locke. Kris Negron hit a leadoff single and scored with two outs on a double by Chih-Hsien Chiang off Locke to make the score 2-1 and end Locke's night. The left hander didn't figure into the decision after going six and two-thirds innings while allowing just one run on only two hits, striking out seven along the way and walking just two.
The Red Sox tied the game in the eighth when pinch-runner Zak Farkes scored on a base hit by Matt Sheely. Farkes came in to run for Will Vazquez who left after getting hit in the head by a Michael Broadway pitch.
Left hander Tommy Palica (0-1) came in for the ninth with the game even at two, and allowed a one-out double to Mike Jones. With two outs, Luis Exposito hit a ball in the left-center field gap to drive home the winning run, Jones. Exposito was credited with just a single as he was mobbed by his teammates before reaching second.
Palica got charged with the loss allowing the winning run in the ninth after recording two outs in his relief appearance. Ryne Miller (4-0) got credit for the win pitching the final two innings without allowing a run or a hit while striking out two.
The series concludes tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 when left hander Carlos Rivas takes the mound for the Pelicans against righty Kyle Weiland at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
