Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Salvador Sanchez delivered the decisive blow in lifting Winston-Salem (8-9) over Wilmington (9-8) 14-13 in a marathon contest on Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Sanchez, who finished 3-for-6 with 4 RBI, hit a bases-loaded double off Brandon Sisk with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to plate three runs and erase a two-run Dash deficit.
The teams combined for 27 runs on 36 hits in the game, which lasted over three hours. Every player in the Dash lineup recorded a hit, as they banged out a season-high 21 for the game. From the beginning, it was not going to be a pitcher's night as Wilmington plated a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Mike Moustakes and a run-scoring single from Clint Robinson.
The Dash wasted little time in responding with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning of Blue Rocks starting pitcher Jason Godin, who was pulled after recording just two outs. The key hits in the eight-run rally came from Greg Paiml, who tallied a three-run double and Christian Marrero, who brought two runs home with a single. Marrero finished the with a Dash season-high four hits and raided his batting average to .385
Wilmington battled back with three runs in the second and three more in the third inning to knot the score at eight. They would eventually take a 9-8 lead on David Lough's RBI single in the fourth inning. Winston-Salem's bats came back to life in the bottom of the fourth when Dale Mollenhauer lined a two-out two-run double and Jordan Danks followed with an RBI single to give the Dash an 11-9 advantage. Danks finished with three hits, two runs an RBI and he also walked twice.
The Blue Rocks tied the game once again with two runs in the fifth inning and would regain the lead in the top of the eighth. Tied at 11, Mike Moustakes crushed a solo home run off Henry Mabee and Paulo Orlando delivered an RBI triple against this former team to put Wilmington in front 13-11.
The Dash would begin the dramatic rally in the bottom off the eighth against Sisk when Logan Johnson led off with a double. Sisk, who had only surrendered two hits and no runs in his first four appearances this year, handed out back-to-back walks to Paiml and Jimmy Gallagher to load the bases and set the stage for Sanchez.
Dash reliever Santo Luis allowed Anthony Seratelli to reach third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but struck out Jeff Bianchi to preserve the win and collect the save. Henry Mabee (2-0) allowed two runs on two hits in two innings out of the bullpen to garner the win. Sisk (0-1) suffered the loss for Wilmington. Gallagher collected two hits for Winston-Salem to extend his hitting streak to a Carolina League-best 16 games.
The finale of this four-game series is on Sunday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will turn to RHP Anthony Carter (1-1, 4.50), while the Blue Rocks are expected to start LHP Danny Duffy (2-0, 2.30). The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
