Lobban Helps Jackals Snap Skid Against Pittsfield

New Jersey Jackals News Release

Pittsfield, MA - Starter Ryan Lobban tossed six solid innings as a short-handed New Jersey Jackals squad defeated the Pittsfield Colonials 6-3 to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday night at Wahconah Park.

As New Jersey built a 4-0 lead, Lobban held the Colonials off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning when center fielder Daniel Carte blasted a two-run home run. Lobban (2-2) turned in his third quality start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks over six frames.

The Jackals struck immediately against rookie right-hander Patrick Moran, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by left fielder Shawn Riggans and a run-scoring single off the bat of first baseman Jabe Bergeron. New Jersey extended its lead to 4-0 with two unearned runs against Moran in the fifth keyed by a leadoff double from catcher Dean Forthun, his first career hit. Moran (0-2) took the loss in his first career start after yielding three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

After a 22-minute sun delay in the middle of the fifth, Carte's blast in the bottom of the fifth cut Pittsfield's deficit in half. But New Jersey right fielder Jacob Butler lifted a leadoff home run in the eighth and the Jackals manufactured a run in the ninth when center fielder Kevin Clark led off with a single before scoring on a successful squeeze but laid down by rookie shortstop Dan Betteridge in his professional debut.

The Jackals played the game with just 21 active players after catcher Jordan Newton's contract was purchased earlier in the contest. With backup catcher Zane Chavez on the inactive list with a broken hand, Forthun earned his first start while Betteridge was forced into the lineup when Riggans was forced to leave after being hit in the elbow with a pitch in the fifth inning.

Pittsfield's only other run came on a two-out single off the bat of designated hitter Daniel Barbero in the bottom of the ninth with rookie reliever Brendon Malkowski on the mound. Relievers Edgar Estanga and Mike Pontius chipped in two scoreless innings out of the New Jersey bullpen.

The Jackals and Colonials play the second contest of their four-game series on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander Isaac Pavlik (3-1, 2.28) to the mound against southpaw Dave Qualben (1-4, 3.95). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
