Sussex Skyhawks News Release

Augusta, N.J. - July 3, 2010 - The Sussex Skyhawks (18-16) fell to the Brockton Rox (20-13) at CenturyLink Field at SkylandsPark 3-2 on Saturday night. The Rox led the game from beginning to end, picking up a run in the top of the first on a sac fly by third baseman Phillip Cuadrado. The visitors added a second run in the third inning on an RBI double by right fielder Keith Brachold and tallied the third and winning run in the seventh inning on error by Sussex first baseman Kris Sanchez. The Skyhawks scored one in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by center fielder Carl Loadenthal, but shortstop Chase Fontaine was thrown out at the plate trying to score a second run on the play. Sussex second baseman Joe Persichina scored the home team's second run in the bottom of the seventh when he stole second and advanced to third and then home on two separate Brockton throwing errors.

Both starting pitchers lasted deep into the game. Brockton's winning pitcher RHP Wayne Lundgren went seven innings and allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out eight, and neither of the runs against him were earned. He is now Brockton's all-time leader in wins with 27 and ranks fourth in the category in Can-Am League history. Sussex's LHP Jeff Icenogle was tagged with the loss despite an eight-inning performance in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out a season-high nine. Brockton RHP Hunter Davis walked away with his fourth save of the year after a scoreless ninth.

The Skyhawks' three-game winning streak is over, but they have another chance to beat the Rox on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. when the two teams conclude a two-game set at CenturyLink Field at SkylandsPark. Sunday is Seniors Day; senior citizens save two dollars off admission and eat free with presentation of a coupon sponsored by Bristol Glen from the New Jersey Herald. Join us at SkylandsPark to celebrate America's Independence Day and cheer on the Sussex Skyhawks! Tomorrow's probable starting pitchers are Sussex RHP Dan Berlind (1-1, 4.97) and Brockton RHP Mike Smith (3-2, 2.08).

DH Caleb Stewart Named Player of the Month for June

Designated hitter Caleb Stewart was named the Teamline Direct Can-Am League Player of the Month for June. Stewart is the first batter in team history to receive the award and the first Sussex player to do so since RHP Gary Galvez was honored in August of 2008.

He scored 16 times and registered 18 walks, ending the month with a .458 on-base percentage and a .562 slugging percentage. Last night in the final game of the month, Stewart launched a two-run homerun in Sussex's 7-4 win and finished the evening 1-for-4 with a walk.
