Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals have announced that catcher Jordan Newton has been sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. The 24-year old will report to the Bradenton Marauders, Pittsburgh's Class A Advanced affiliate in the Florida State League.

In 27 games with New Jersey this season, Newton batted .364 with two home runs in 20 RBIs. Newton posted the fourth-highest batting average in the Can-Am League and his nine doubles led the Jackals. Newton served as New Jersey's primary catcher, starting 17 games behind the plate while making five starts in left field and four at designated hitter in his first season with the team.

"We are very excited for Jordan," manager Joe Calfapietra said. "He has worked hard and proven that he is deserving of another chance of achieving his dream of playing in the major leagues."

A native of Hodgenville, KY, Newton was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 2006 draft out of Western Kentucky University. Newton returns to the Florida State League, where he batted .263 with eight home runs 75 games in 2009 for the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the Detroit Tigers' outpost in the league. Newton spent four years in the Tigers' organization before joining the Jackals in 2010 for his fifth professional season.

Newton becomes the seventh Jackals player since the end of the 2009 season to sign with a Major League organization and the 22nd to sign since the beginning of the 2006 season. Newton is the second New Jersey player to sign with an affiliated organization over the past two days as second baseman Argenis Reyes had his contract sold to the Boston Red Sox on July 2. Reyes reported to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Jackals wish Jordan Newton the best of luck for the rest of the 2010 season.
