Brockton Rox News Release
Augusta, N.J. - RHP Wayne Lundgren pitched seven full innings and allowed just two unearned runs on five hits as the Brockton Rox beat the Sussex Skyhawks, 3-2, on Saturday at Skylands Park. The victory was Lundgren's 27th in his Brockton career which makes him No. 1 in Rox history.
The Rox (20-13) are now 5-1 against the Skyhawks this season and have won 13 of their last 17 games. They took the lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by 3B Phillip Cuadrado. The run was setup by 1B Melvin Falu's single and RF Keith Brachold's double. Brockton doubled their lead in the third on an RBI groundout by Brachold, his team-leading 30th RBI of the season.
Sussex (18-16) was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame on CF Carl Loadenthal's single. On that same single, SS Chase Fontaine tried to score from second base but was thrown out at home by Brockton LF Mike Conroy. C Chris Grossman took the throw that was off the mark and was able to slap a tag on the leg of Fontaine to save a run from being scored.
The game stayed 2-1 in favor of the Rox until the seventh when they added an unearned run when Brachold's grounder was mis-played by 1B Kris Sanchez, allowing 2B Scott Wearne to score from second base. The Skyhawks retaliated with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the inning as 2B Joe Persichina stole second and then scored on two throwing errors on the same play.
Brockton's 3-2 advantage would stick over the final two innings as RHP Josh Papelbon pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. RHP Hunter Davis followed in the ninth and earned his fourth save in as many chances while allowing just a single walk with one strikeout.
Lundgren (5-1), who has won five straight starts and joins teammate LHP Mike Wlodarczyk as the only pitchers in the league with five wins, struck out a season-high eight batters with just one walk. Sussex starter Jeff Icenogle (2-1) dropped the decision, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in eight innings with nine strikeouts and two walks.
Wearne, in his first game as a lead-off hitter, was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Brachold and Grossman each added multiple hits, while Brachold and Cuadrado accounted for Brockton's two runs driven in on the night. Cuadrado failed to reach base in the game which snaps his on-base streak at 19 games.
Game two of the five-game split-series between the two clubs will take place at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. RHP Mike Smith (3-2) will make the start for Brockton against RHP Dan Berlind (1-1).
