VANCOUVER, B.C. Monday, February 3rd, 2003 -- BC Lions General Manager and Head Coach, Wally Buono, today announced Mike Benevides as Special Teams and Linebackers Coach of the BC Lions.

"We are very pleased to have Mike as our Special Teams and Linebackers coach," said Buono. "Mike brings enthusiasm and knowledge that will help the Lions in their success."

Benevides joins the Lions after three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders where he held a similar position. In the Stampeder organization, Mike served as a guest coach, assistant defensive coach, special teams coach and linebacker coach.

A 12-year coaching veteran and graduate of Bakersfield College and York University, Benevides previously spent six years in the CIAU as coordinator, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Mike was a key figure in the resurgence of the York University football program – helping them gain a playoff spot for the first time in 10 years while going 6-2 during the regular season.

Before his CIAU coaching experience, Mike coached at the high school level in Toronto for five years and won three City Championships and one Metro Bowl appearance. A Toronto native, Mike was awarded an athletic scholarship to Bakersfield College in California where he played nosetackle for the 1988 National Champions. He left California for the York Yeomen where he was named Lineman of the Year.

Born and raised in Toronto, Mike owns several businesses in Road Construction and Marking. He is married to Judith Ann. His name is pronounced as Ben-a-v-dis.
