Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
FORT WORTH, TX - The Lincoln Saltdogs won their fourth game in a row on Friday, beating Fort Worth 5-2. Lincoln improves to 4-4 on the season.
The Saltdogs got all the runs they would need in the second inning, with some help from the Cats defense. With two on and one out, Argelis Nunez grounded to third, and Michael Bell threw the ball away to allow the first run to score. Gavin Dickey followed with a sacrifice fly. With runners on first and third, Tycen PoVey ground back to the mound, and Tim Bittner (0-2) threw the ball into center field for the second error of the inning.
That was more than enough for Lincoln starter Billy Weitzman (1-1), who threw six innings of shutout baseball. Weitzman scattered eight hits, pitching out of jams in the first, fifth and sixth innings. He didn't walk a batter while striking out four, earning his first win in a Saltdogs uniform.
The Saltdogs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth, on a sacrifice fly by Nunez and a wild pitch, and those proved to be important in the bottom of the eighth. Fort Worth plated a pair of runs on a two-out single by Justin Holloway, pulling the Cats within three. Fort Worth left 11 men on base, though, wasting most of their 12 hits on the night. Chris Thompson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save.
Lincoln and Fort Worth play game two of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Right-hander Jim Paduch will take the mound for the Saltdogs.
The home opener for Season Ten of Saltdogs Baseball takes place May 25 against Wichita. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
