Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Pensacola Pelicans catcher Chris Chiarappa had not had a hit in his first two starts of the 2010 season, but he had three on Thursday night, including a leadoff infield single in the top of the eighth inning. A sacrifice bunt and two hits later, Chiarappa touched home plate with the first run of the game, as Pensacola added another run and held on to beat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 2-0 in front of 1,112 fans at Fair Grounds Field.
The eighth-inning Pelicans rally was all they needed, as Jason Jones (1-0) and a pair of relievers held the Captains (5-3) to just five hits in the game - easily the team's lowest offensive output of the young season. Shreveport-Bossier only had two runners reach second base in the game, with no one getting to third, as the Pelicans (2-5) earned a split of the four-game series.
Justin Young (1-1) deserved a better fate than he got, pitching seven shutout innings before surrendering the leadoff hit to Chiarappa in the eighth. He pitched out of several jams, including getting a line drive double play with the bases loaded and one out in the first. But after Chiarappa got one, lefty Aaron Cunningham came in, with lefty hitter Francisco Leandro bunting the runner to second. Jason Herman then relieved Cunningham, and gave up a single to Adolfo Gonzalez to put runners on first and third. The next batter, Antoin Gray, lined a sharp single to the left of the diving shortstop Bryan Frichter to break the scoreless draw. Marcos Rodriguez then drilled a single to right to plate Gonzalez, although Gray was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Bryan Sabatella.
Cody Railsback came in and got the last four outs in a row in his Captains debut, but by then it was too late. Tyler Wilson set down Shreveport-Bossier in order in the eighth, and Tommy Baumgardner did the same in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Jones walked a man with two outs in the first, and then pitched a 1-2-3 second. He then allowed exactly one hit in each of the next five innings, only giving up two runners in the sixth. After a one-out walk to Garcia and a single by Andres Rodriguez, Jones got Jorge Alvarez and Palmer Karr to fly out and end the threat. The righty finished with two walks and four strikeouts, allowing all five Captains' singles.
Notes: The Captains only lost one game last season when their opponent scored fewer than three runs, a 2-1 loss against El Paso late in the season...Only five of the game's 54 outs were made to the outfield...Catcher Brian Peterson had two of the five Captains hits, his first multi-hit game of the season. Peterson also stole a base and made a great catch on a bunt attempt by Leandro in the third inning.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their first homestand of the year with a three-game series against the El Paso Diablos, starting on Friday, May 21 at 7:05 p.m. The game is the first KSLA Faith and Family Night of the season, featuring a postgame concert from Tyler Hennessee and the Broadmoor Praise Band. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com. For information on tickets, promotions, advertising, and other opportunities with the Captains, check out the team's Web site at www.sbcaptains.com, or call the Fair Grounds Field office at (318) 636-5555.
