San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Following a two-game winning streak to finish out the series in Amarillo the San Antonio Missions returned home in hopes of securing their first home win of the season. Instead, they ran into a dominant performance from Connor Lunn. The Springfield Cardinals scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Missions by a final score of 5-1.
Reggie Lawson made his second start of the season for the Missions after recording the loss on April 20th. The right-hander faced some trouble in this outing as well. In the top of the first inning, the Missions allowed three runs on two hits. Chase Pinder began the ballgame with a double and Matt Koperniak drew a walk. With two on and no outs, Jorden Walker grounded into a fielder's choice with Pinder forced out at third base. On the play, Yorman Rodriguez attempted to get the out at second base but instead threw it into right field. Moises Gomez made San Antonio pay with a three-run homer. His 10th long ball of the season gave Springfield an early 3-0 advantage.
The San Antonio offense, coming off a stellar series in Amarillo, got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Esteury Ruiz was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. He has reached base safely in all 16 games this season. Chris Givin continued his hot streak with a double to the left field wall. After a Brandon Dixon strikeout, Yorman Rodriguez drove in Ruiz with a sacrifice fly.
Lawson's night would come to an end in the second inning after having more difficulty with the Cardinals batters. Pinder reached base for the second time after hitting a single. Pinder came around to score after a fielding error from Dixon. Koperniak hit a ground ball to Dixon at first base and he let go through his legs into right field. After striking out Walker for out number two, Lawson was replaced by Ryan Lillie. Springfield improved their lead to 4-1.
Springfield added an insurance run in the top of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Lillie allowed a walk to Chandler Redmond. The following batter was Pedro Pages and he doubled to left field. Lillie loaded the bases after walking Delvin Perez. Redmond came around to score after a sacrifice fly from Nick Dunn. The Cardinals had a 5-1 lead.
Connor Lunn was the starting pitcher for the Springfield Cardinals. Lunn allowed three hits and one run across the first three innings. He did not allow a base hit until the bottom of the seventh inning. After reaching 100 pitches in the seventh inning, Lunn's night was over. He records the win after allowing one run, four hits, one walk, and striking out eight batters in 6.2 innings.
Ryan Lillie and Ramon Perez put together their strongest outings of the season thus far. Lillie allowed one run in 3.1 innings pitched with just two hits allowed. Perez retired all six batters he faced while striking out three of them. Nolan Watson contributed with a scoreless eighth inning and Kevin Kopps pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Missions had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing Grant Black, Chandler Seagle drew a lead-off walk. After a fly out and a strikeout, Dixon drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Yorman Rodriguez grounded out to end the threat and keep the game a 5-1 Springfield lead.
