Brockton Rox News Release

WORCESTER, MA - LHP Rolando Viera pitched seven shutout innings and the Rox scored five runs in the first three frames to beat the Worcester Tornadoes 6-3 at Hanover Insurance Park in Worcester, MA before a holiday weekend crowd of 1,977. 3B Zach Strong had three hits and an RBI against his former team in the victory. The Rox have won seven of their last eight games and won the series with the Tornadoes three games to one. The Rox are now 18-18 in 2006 with 10 games left to play in the Can-Am League's first half.

With one out in the first inning and RHP Reid Willett on the hill for the Tornadoes, SS Mike Scanzano reached on an error. DH Guye Senjem followed with a single to center, and 1B Francisco Lebron drove in a run for the second straight day with a run-scoring single to center. After a single by Strong loaded the bases, LF Kris Zacuto ripped a base-hit to left-center, plating Senjem and giving Brockton a 2-0 lead. C Mike Torres finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

In the second inning, the Rox scored again when Strong drove home a run with an opposite field single, and 2B Eugene Julien knocked home RF Joe Hough in the third inning putting the Rox in front 5-0. Viera faced little trouble in seven innings of work, allowing just one runner to second base. Viera's seven strikeouts give him 28 in his last three starts and 38 in his last four starts. He has allowed just one earned run in his last three starts (22.2 IP) and two in his las four starts (29.2 IP).

The Rox scored again in the eighth on a Senjem run-scoring single to take a 6-0 lead. RHP Santos Gonzalez pitched a scoreless eighth, but did walk two batters, ending a streak of 26 straight innings for the Rox pitching staff without a walk. RHP Wayne Lundgren allowed four hits in the ninth inning, including RBI singles to PH Keith Beauregard and 3B Jeff LaHair, as the Tornadoes narrowed the gap. RHP Jon Koch induced a sacrifice fly and a groundout to preserve the 6-3 victory.

RHP Brad Guy (2-1, 3.64 ERA) takes the hill for Brockton tomorrow as the Rox head to Quebec City to play the Quebec Capitales in the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
