LHP Cervenka Promoted to Tennessee

KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Double-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announced this afternoon that LHP Hunter Cervenka has been promoted to the team's active roster. In a corresponding move, RHP Brian Schlitter has been promoted to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. All moves are immediate, with Cervenka being active for the team's 7:15 game tonight against the Huntsville Stars.

Cervenka, 23, was 1-0 with five saves and a 2.91 ERA (7 ER/ 21.2 IP) for the D-Cubs this season. In 11 relief appearances, the left-handed pitcher allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits, walking 15 and striking out 21. The Baytown, Texas native was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 27th round of the 2008 draft out of Sterling (Texas) High School. Cervenka was traded to the Cubs in 2012 as part of the deal that brought P Michael Bowden to Chicago for OF Marlon Byrd.

Schlitter, 27, was 0-2 with two saves and a 0.83 ERA (2 ER/ 21.2 IP) in 16 relief appearances for the Smokies in 2013. The Oak Park, Ill. native was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round of the 2007 draft, Schlitter was traded to the Cubs in 2008 for P Scott Eyre.
