Jackson Generals News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 27, 2013) - A six-run eighth inning that featured five hits and a long ball propelled the Jackson Generals (22-26) to a 9-3 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (24-26) on Memorial Day. Jackson pounded out 10 hits, as recently added Generals first basemen Rich Poythress (2-2, HR, 3 R, RBI, 2B) left his mark on Monday's game by reaching base in every at-bat.

The scoring started early yet again as every game in the series has included at least a run from either team. Denny Almonte (1-5, HR, 2 R, RBI) started things off by reaching on a fielder's choice, stealing second and coming around to score on a Julio Morban (2-5, R, RBI) single. The Biscuits had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the first, but only scored once after a double play and a strikeout did them in.

Montgomery smoked back-to-back RBI doubles in the third, putting them up a deuce, but Carlton Tanaba (1-3, R, 2 RBI, BB), in his first start fresh from A+ High Desert, grabbed his first hit and RBI at the AA level in the fourth, leaving the Generals down only one. Jackson then evened everything in the sixth with Poythress' solo home run, his first of the season for the Generals.

In what could be considered a statement inning, Jackson sent ten batters to the plate in the eighth and tacked six runs on the scoreboard. The Biscuits failed to respond as Kyle Hunter and Carson Smith finished the game out of the bullpen, allowing only one hit between the both of them.

Generals' starter Brett Shankin (3-1, 4.04) battled all day long, getting into trouble with four walks and hitting two batters. He surrendered all three runs and seven of the eight Biscuit hits, giving way to Moises Hernandez (W, 1-2, 5.63), who pitched another 1.2 perfect innings to earn the win. Hernandez has not surrendered a run or hit since coming off the disable list on May 20.

The Generals finished leaving six runners on base, but seven different players recorded RBIs in the series finale. With the win, it was the second time in the past two sets Jackson has taken a series in the rubber match.

Jackson will host a five-game home stand starting tomorrow at 7:05 CST as they welcome the Huntsville Stars to town. Anthony Fernandez (2-0, 6.66) will make the start for the Generals. Jimmy Nelson (5-3, 2.98) will go for the Stars. You can listen to the pre-game show at 6:50 p.m. on 96.5 ESPN Radio, the TuneIn Radio App. and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com, followed by the game.
