
Lexington Legends Split Doubleheader with Augusta GreenJackets

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) - After two days of rain, the clouds parted and the Lexington Legends and Augusta Greenjackets split a doubleheader, the first of four games this weekend. The Legends fell in game one 4-3 but then walked it off in the second game, 8-7. Lexington's record now sits at 28-23 while Augusta's is 34-18.
In game one, the Greenjackets plated their first runs in the first inning. Heliot Ramos reached on an error by Legends' third baseman Dennicher Carrasco then was joined on the base path when Shane Matheny drew a walk. Manuel Geraldo blasted a three-run homer to left field and the Greenjackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Seuly Matias sent a solo home run to centerfield and the Legends were on the board, 3-1.
Augusta scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Ryan Kirby lined a solo shot, extending their lead 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ricky Aracena reached on a single up the middle for the Legends. Travis Jones golfed a two-run homer to right field, pulling the Legends within one run. Lexington was unable to make up the run and fell in game one, 4-3.
Augusta started the second game the same way as the first. Jacob Gonzalez sent a three-run home run over the left field wall and the Greenjackets led 3-0.
The Legends struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Brewer Hicklen lined a double down the right field line then scored on an RBI single by Cristian Perez and the Legends were on the board, 3-1.
In the top of the third, Gonzalez lined a double to right centerfield then swiped third base. Gonzalez was able to score on an error by the Legends and the Greenjackets led, 4-1.
Augusta plated another run in the top of the fourth. Nick Hill put down a weak groundball to the left of the mound then scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Bond. Heading into the bottom of the inning, the Greenjackets led 5-1.
The Legends tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Marten Gasparini lined a single to right field then scored on an RBI double by Perez. Perez then advanced to third on a single by Matt Morales. With Morales at first and Perez on third, Augusta's pitcher Franklin Van Gurp balked, scoring Perez and moving Morales to second. Cal Jones reached on a fielding error by Augusta and Morales was able to score. With Cal Jones on first, Travis Jones lined an RBI single down the right field line and the game was tied at five runs apiece.
In the top of the sixth, Rob Calabrese led off with a single to left field for Augusta. Aaron Bond then brought him home with a single and the Greenjackets led 6-5.
The Legends would tie it up in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Jones lined a double down the left field line then scored on an RBI single, sending the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, both teams were able to score their Pace of Play Runner, sending the game into the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lexington loaded the bases and Travis Jones lined the game winning RBI single to right field, plating Perez, and the Legends won game two 8-7.
Garrett Davila was given the loss for the Legends, tossing 6.0 innings allowing three runs (zero earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out seven. Tyler Zuber earned the win for Lexington in game two, tossing 1.0 shutout inning allowing just one hit.
The Legends and Greenjackets meet for game three tomorrow, June 2 at 6:35 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. RHP Nolan Watson (3-5, 6.56 ERA) will be on the mound for Lexington and RHP Junior Marte (NR) will pitch for Augusta.
