Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The Delmarva Shorebirds lost their season-high sixth straight game, a 3-2 decision to the Charleston RiverDogs on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Alexander Vargas (3-1) earned the win with a Quality Start for the RiverDogs (25-28), allowing two runs (one earned) on eight his over six innings while walking one and striking out two. Cameron Ming (0-1) took the loss for the Shorebirds (29-23), giving up the go-ahead run in the sixth but otherwise pitching well over 2.2 relief innings. Kyle Zubak got some help from his defense in the ninth for his third save of the year.

Delmarva broke the seal with a run in the top of the third. Jaylen Ferguson led off with a double and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Kirvin Moesquit then rolled one through the drawn-in infield for an RBI single to make it 1-0.

Charleston got that run back in the home half of the third. Matt McPhearson drew a leadoff walk, stole second, got to third on a groundout, and scored on an Oswaldo Cabrera sac fly. The run snapped a 19.2-inning scoreless streak for Shorebird starter Matthias Dietz, who hadn't given up a run since the first inning in Lexington on May 10.

The RiverDogs loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and took the lead on Jason Lopez's infield single. After a strikeout, Dietz was lifted in favor of Ming, who got Wilkerman Garcia to ground out and keep the Shorebirds within 2-1.

Dietz finished a short night with a no-decision, allowing two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings. He walked five and struck out four.

The Shorebirds got their starter off the hook in the top of the fifth. Ferguson legged out an infield single and moved up to second when the throw from short sailed into the dugout. After a groundout that put Ferguson at third, Mason McCoy laced a single to chase him home and tie it at 2-2.

The RiverDogs went up for good in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back triples from Leonardo Molina and Chris Hess. After Molina's initial three-sacker to the tricky left field corner, Hess hit a soft liner to left. Max Hogan sold out and dove for it but missed, turning a run-scoring single into a triple. The risky defense wouldn't hurt the Shorebirds any further, though, as Ming stranded men on second and third to end the inning.

Charleston went to buzzsaw righty Greg Weissert for the seventh and eighth innings. Weissert struck out all six men to face him for his second hold of the year.

In the ninth, Trevor Craport led off and bashed a deep fly to left field, but Pablo Olivares timed his leap perfectly and robbed Craport of what would have been the game-tying home run. Hogan managed a two-out walk to get the tying run on base, but Zurak fanned Ben Breazeale to wrap it up for the home side.

Ferguson managed his first multi-hit game for the Shorebirds, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. McCoy finished 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Molina, Hess, and Lopez combined for three hits and two RBIs in the seven-eight-nine slots for the RiverDogs.

The Shorebirds get back on the horse against the RiverDogs on Saturday. Brenan Hanifee (4-1, 2.55) makes his first start for Delmarva since turning 20 against Charleston 20-year-old Rony Garcia (2-2, 3.80). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 5:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
