Lewis Ties Triples Record in Spikes' 10-4 Loss to Doubledays

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE - Taylor Lewis became just the second State College Spikes player to notch two triples in a game, but the Auburn Doubledays became the first team to reach double digits in the runs column against the Spikes this year with a 10-4 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday night.

Lewis joined Elevys Gonzalez as the only two Spikes (5-12) players with multiple three-base hits in a single game. Gonzalez accomplished the feat on September 2, 2009 against the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Maine product now has four triples in State College's last three games.

Auburn (9-8) took the initial lead of the game in the first inning, with an RBI groundout by Russell Moldenhauer, who followed with a two-run homer off Spikes left-hander Josh Poytress (0-2) to give the Doubledays a 3-0 lead in the third. State College retaliated with an RBI double from Kirk Singer to make it 3-1. Auburn then added four runs in the fourth inning, capped by a Hendry Jimenez two-run homer, to extend its advantage to 7-1.

The Spikes came right back with their biggest flurry of the evening in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a leadoff triple by Carlos Mesa. Two batters later, Lewis followed with his second triple of the game to score Mesa, and Walker Gourley delivered an RBI double immediately after to cut the deficit to four runs. Gourley would then cross the plate on a wild pitch by Doubledays starter Wirkin Estevez to make it 7-4. However, State College got no closer than that, and three Auburn runs in the ninth gave the game its final result.

Poytress took the loss in his first start as a professional, allowing three runs (two of them earned) on four hits while striking out one Auburn batter. Joan Montero threw three scoreless innings of relief for the Spikes and picked up three strikeouts along the way.

Bryan Dupra (1-0) earned the win for Auburn with four scoreless innings following Estevez. Dupra yielded two hits and a walk, adding two strikeouts.

The Spikes concluded their five-game homestand with a 3-2 record, and have won or split each of their last two series.

Monday, the Spikes and Doubledays head to Falcon Park in Auburn to begin a two-game series with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on the Fourth of July. State College will send right-hander Matt Benedict (1-0) to the mound. Benedict has an ERA of just 0.73 over his first three starts, and earned his first professional victory in his last appearance on Wednesday against Mahoning Valley. Auburn's starter has not been announced at this time.

The Spikes will return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday, July 9 to start a three-game homestand against the Batavia Muckdogs (St. Louis Cardinals).

Fans can still enjoy a night of fun, family entertainment at the ballpark on Monday, though, as Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will open up as part of the Central PA 4th Fest. Gates will open at 4 p.m., allowing fans to make their way around the ballpark before the gigantic 4th Fest fireworks display begins at 9:15 p.m.

Catch all of the action on Monday via the Spikes Radio Network at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Falcon Park. The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3 FM 3WZ.
