Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Nestor Castillo's sinking liner to center ï¬Âeld in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Jamestown Jammers past the Williamsport Crosscutters, 3-2, at Diethrick Park Sunday afternoon.
The Jammers had loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a catcher's interference call to set the stage for Castillo to deliver the winning run.
Terrence Dayleg led the offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Pedro Mendoza added a pair of singles, and Jobduan Morales roped two hits.
Jamestown struck ï¬Ârst in the bottom of the third inning after stringing together three two-out hits to take a two-run lead. Ryan Goetz and Mendoza ripped back-to-back singles to right, and Dayleg crushed a double off the wall in left ï¬Âeld to plate both runners. Williamsport starter Mike Nesseth would get Rand Smith to ground out to escape further damage.
Williamsport would get both runs back in the ï¬Âfth as they were able to capitalize on starting pitcher Jose Urena's wildness. After consecutive walks to start the frame, Taylor Black hit one to the left to double in a run, and Kyrell Hudson singled in a run to put men at the corners. Catcher's interference would load up the bases, but Jamestown would escape the bases- loaded jam without further damage after Tyler Topp got a strike out and double play to end the inning.
Neither team would threaten until the top of the ninth inning when Williamsport nearly capitalized on more Jamestown wildness. Harold Martinez and Bob Stumpo both walked to start the inning, and Black tried to lay down a sacriï¬Âce bunt; however, reliever Blake Brewer was able to get the lead runner at third to keep the force on. Hudson advanced the runners with a ground out to ï¬Ârst before Kelly Dugan was intentionally walked to load up the bases. Brewer got a ï¬ây out to end the inning and keep the score tied.
Jamestown would strike quickly in the ninth inning. Ryan McIntyre started the frame with a line drive to center, and Jobduan Morales chopped one over the third baseman's head to put runners at ï¬Ârst and second. Eddie Rodriguez would reach on a catcher's interference to load the bases and set the stage for Castillo's heroics.
Brewer earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. He didn't allow a hit and struck out two in two innings. Tyler Topp also pitched three innings of scoreless relief, and he struck out four.
Austin Brough took the loss for Williamsport, who fell to 0-5 against Jamestown this season, after failing to record an out in the ninth inning. Hudson paced the Crosscutters' offense with two hits and a RBI.
The two teams will travel to Williamsport for two more games before Jamestown returns home Wednesday night to face Auburn.
