Lehner Bests Boucher in Tight Matchup

February 6, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

It was the veteran goalie against the hot prospect at the Glens Falls Civic Center Wednesday night. And 21-year-old Robin Lehner of the Binghamton Senators strengthened his hold as perhaps the top goaltender in the AHL right now with a 29-save shutout of the Adirondack Phantoms in a 3-0 final.

It was really a 1-0 game that Binghamton was finally able to put away late via a goal with two minutes remaining and then an empty-netter. But for the duration of the third-period, the Phantoms kept on charging at Lehner over and over including three straight power plays to begin the third yet somehow were denied every time trying to find the back of the net. Lehner raised his goals-against average to almost .950 with the victory.

36-year-old Brian Boucher played extremely well in what was essentially a 1-0 contest. In the first period with the score still 0-0, he found himself without a stick and down in the crease but somehow was able to rise to his skates and cover space and eventually end up with a save on a blast that appeared and sounded as though it went off his helmet or mask.

In the second period, Harry Zolnierczyk found Rob Bordson barging down the slot on an early rush but Lehner flashed his left-leg for one of his best saves of the night. Just moments later, the speedy Senators sailed swiftly into the zone and found an open Corey Cowick in the crease who was able to capitalize for his seventh of the year. It was essentially a two-goal swing in just seconds as the game went from an apparent and near-probably 1-0 advantage for Adirondack and instead turned into a 1-0 lead for Binghamton.

Adirondack gained momentum by the end of the second period after surviving a flurry of Binghamton shots. And after several more close-calls for the Phantoms they would carry a power play into the beginning of the third. The Phantoms would even get two more power plays after that. No luck though. And with 10:00 remaining in the game and after the three straight man-advantages, the Phantoms still found themselves down 1-0.

The Phantoms got tagged for a late tripping penalty giving Binghamton a power play with three minutes to go and Danny New blasted his first AHL goal on a one-timer from the left-ring with 2:01 left to mostly seal the victory. A long and fortunate empty-netter from deep in the Binghamton zone by Eric Lebda would conclude the scoring.

The Wednesday night contingent enjoyed $1 Hot Dog Night at the Glens Falls Civic Center and were encouraged at the second intermission to make it to 1,000 hot dogs in the game. At the time, the total was 750. Fans around the building were able to summon the ability to enjoy one more to contribute to the cause and by about 5:00 left in the game, the announcement was officially made that the crowd had indeed reached 1,000 hot dogs. Congrats on your spectacular achievement, fans!

Phantoms scratches for the game included Mike Testwuide, Matthew Ford, Zack FitzGerald, Garrett Roe and Jeff Dimmen.

The Phantoms are scheduled to play next at the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night. However, due to the big impending snow-storm that day, games have already been postponed for Friday in Springfield and Providence. Adirondack's game that night at Syracuse is still on as scheduled.

Adirondack is back at home on Sunday at 3:00 against Syracuse again on Family Fun Pack Day. 3 tickets, 3 sodas, 3 hot dogs, 1 popcorn and 1 program all for $43. Plus a post-game skate with the players presented by Glens Falls Hospital. Call the Phantoms for tickets at 518-480-3355.
