
Goalies Shine as Griffins Shutout Aeros 2-0

Grand Rapids, MI - The Houston Aeros (22-18-4-3, 51 points) were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins (27-14-2-2, 58 points) 2-0 on Wednesday night in front of 5,938 fans at Van Andel Arena. Griffins forward Riley Sheahan gave his club the lead just 3:45 into the game and goalie Tom McCollum took care of the rest, finishing with 28 saves for his second shutout of the season. The Aeros got off to a slow start with only four first-period shots, than McCollum (11-6-1) took over with 24 saves over the final two periods. Former Aero Jeff Hoggan added an empty-net goal for the two-goal win. Aside from a first-period goal against, Aeros goalie Darcy Kuemper (9-6-0) was nearly as good as his counterpart, finishing with 23 saves on 24 shots. Houston will play in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. on Friday at the BMO Harris Bank Bradley Center.
Grand Rapids struck for the first goal of the game just 3:45 into the game. Riley Sheahan found a loose puck outside of the Aeros crease and sent a backhand shot past Houston goalie Darcy Kuemper for the 1-0 lead. Forward Brett Skinner and Tomas Jurco each had an assist on Sheahan's 14th goal of the season.
Looking for the equalizer, Houston pulled Kuemper late in the third period for the extra skater. Former Aero Jeff Hoggan picked up a loose puck at center and scored his seventh goal of the season with five seconds remaining. The empty-net goal made it a 2-0 final.
Houston continues on an eight-game road trip on Friday, Feb. 8 in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. CT. The Aeros return home on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:05 p.m. as Houston hosts Oklahoma City at Toyota Center. The team will celebrate Boy Scout Night by handing out Team Posters to the first 2,000 fans will receive a 2012-13 Houston Aeros team poster.
