Lexington Legends News Release
With both teams probably still a little bleary-eyed from their record-setting performance the night before, the Legends put another record to bed in a big way on Saturday night, crushing the visiting West Virginia Power 9-1 in the series finale to break their franchise-record winning streak.
The Legends took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. Greg Buchanan bunted perfectly down the third-base line for a one-out single. Jordan Parraz and Chris Johnson followed with back-to-back home runs to center field, just to the left of the batter's eye. The balls were hit to nearly identical locations beyond the outfield wall, and were both measured in excess of 400 feet.
West Virginia's Kenny Holmberg answered in the second with a home run of his own, but Lexington's Johnson quickly responded with his second home run of the game, this time to center, to put the lead back at three. The longball was his fifth of the season.
Jimmy Van Ostrand joined the party with a home run off the railing in front of the bleachers in left to add a couple more runs in the fifth. Johnson, who had singled and stolen second, scored on the play, capping off a 3-for-4 evening in which he scored three times and drove in two runs.
Both teams were shorthanded from a pitching perspective after going seventeen innings on Friday night. David Qualben (3-1) started and answered the call for the home team, going six innings, striking out five, and allowing a lone run--Holmberg's solo shot in the second. New Legend Sergio Severino pitched the final three innings for the save. He struck out six in the process of shutting down the Power.
West Virginia wasn't so lucky with their limited pitching options. Starter Brae Wright (1-1) gave up six runs on eleven hits in his five innings of work. Jose Romero provided two shutout innings of middle relief, but Travis Wendte came on for the eighth and let three more runs cross the plate--two of them on a ground-ball triple into left field by Nick Moresi.
The Legends' offensive attack was relentless. They amassed fourteen hits, and every starter managed to collect at least one. Moresi hit a one-out double in the sixth, putting him a home run short of the cycle.
Lexington will have a day off before hitting the road for an eight-game swing through Lakewood and West Virginia. They'll return home on May 8 for a match-up with Lake County. The Legends begin a four-game set with Lakewood Monday night at 6:35 p.m. Doug Arguello (0-2, 7.50) draws Carlos Monasterios (1-1, 5.21) in the series opener.
