LEXINGTON, Ky. - Lexington scored five times in the fifth inning, and Charleston's defense committed a season-high five errors in a 12-4 Legends win in South Atlantic League action at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
The error-riddled bottom half of the fifth saw Lexington seize a 7-2 lead after the game was tied at 2-2. Three Charleston errors coupled with just two infield singles spelled the end for Charleston starter Kramer Sneed (0-1), who worked just 3.1 innings in his SAL debut, permitting four runs - two earned - on three hits with a pair of punchouts.
Kelvin Castro inched the RiverDogs to 7-3 in the fifth with a RBI single to left-centerfield.
Chris Wallace's RBI double in the sixth inning put the advantage back at five runs, as an 8-3 score went to the seventh.
Slade Heathcott continued his early season tear, lofting a RBI double to left field in the seventh, trimming the deficit to 8-4.
The game was throttled out of reach by the Legends via a four-run eighth inning, as Mike Kvasnicka knocked a three-run double in the left-field corner - his fourth hit of the game -- and scored on Daniel Adamson's RBI single for a 12-4 lead.
Carlos Quevedo (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings to get the win, letting three runs score on seven hits, while walking none and fanning three. Lefty Alex Sogard penned the final 3.0 frames to notch his first save.
Castro staked Charleston to a 1-0 lead in the first by clobbering a solo home run to straight-away centerfield on his first swing of the season against Lexington starter Quevedo. Castro, who played in 123 games with the RiverDogs last year, hit two home runs in all of 2010.
Lexington took its first lead of the game in the second, when Wallace scored from third on a throwing error, and Adam Bailey pounded an RBI double for the 2-1 advantage off Charleston's Sneed.
Ramon Flores tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth with a RBI single to right field that plated Gary Sanchez, who doubled with one out in the frame.
Heathcott finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and concluded the four-game series going 9-for-18 with two home runs, a triple and four doubles. Castro added a pair of hits in the defeat.
Charleston begins the second half of the season-opening eight-game road trip Monday at 7 p.m. with game one of a four-game series against the Upstate-rival Greenville Drive at Fluor Field. RiverDogs' right-hander Zach Nuding (0-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the slab for the visitors, while Greenville sends right-hander Miguel Celestino (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the hill in the lidlifter.
