Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greenville, SC - While the final round of The Masters was taking place back in Augusta, the Greenville Drive came close to their best Rory McIlroy impression on Sunday, nearly wasting a large lead before holding on late in a 10-7 win over the Augusta GreenJackets.
With two outs in the eighth inning, Ryan Scoma's run-scoring double and Rafael Rodriguez's RBI single preceded Devin Harris' three-run home run to make a close game out of one that hadn't been competitive for much of the afternoon. Prior to the eighth, Augusta had recorded just two hits the entire game and none since the second inning.
After Brandon Jacobs added a solo home run for the Drive in the ninth inning, Dennis Neuman - who was on the mound for Greenville during much of the five-run eighth - retired the side in order during the Augusta ninth to seal the 10-7 Greenville win.
Greenville scored in the first inning for the third straight game and scored first in all four games of the series. In this one, they took advantage of three Augusta errors in the first to put a six spot on the scoreboard. Jacobs hit a two-run double for the Drive on a ball Rodriguez lost in the sun for the key play in the big inning. In all, the GreenJackets defense would commit five errors on the afternoon.
Augusta struck back to score two in the second, but the Drive added a run in the third and two more in the fourth to gain the seven-run advantage they held for most of the afternoon until Augusta's late rally.
Edwin Escobar (0-1) took the loss for the GreenJackets, struggling through just the first inning while allowing six runs - four earned - on five hits and a walk. He struck out one in an inning where he got little help from his defense. Jordan Flasher (1-1) threw a scoreless third inning in relief of Greenville starter Brandon Workman to get his first win of the season.
After Greenville took three of four from Augusta in their first series of 2011, the GreenJackets will head to Rome to attempt to salvage a winning road trip for the first of four games against the Braves. Taylor Rogers will make his GreenJackets debut while the Braves send Carlos Perez to the mound. First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets play their home opener on Friday April 15th at 7:35 p.m. against the West Virginia Power. Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
