Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends took advantage of eight walks and five Charleston errors to beat the RiverDogs 12-4 Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Charleston took an early lead on a home run over 401-foot mark in center field wall by Kelvin Castro in the top of the first inning, but the Legends came back with two in the bottom of the second, one scoring on a throwing error by catcher Gary Sanchez, the other on a double by Legends right fielder Adam Bailey.
The RiverDogs scored once in the fourth on a double by Sanchez and a single by Ramon Flores, but Lexington answered with five in the bottom of the fourth. The RiverDogs helped out with three errors and a walk. A one-out single by Mike Kvasnicka and an error by third baseman Rob Segedin on a ball hit by Jhonny Medrano put runners on first and third. Kvasnicka came home on a wild pitch by Charleston starter Kramer Sneed, and Medrano scored as Daniel Adamson was safe on a fielder's choice. After Adam Bailey grounded into a force play at second, Roberto Pena reached on a second error by Segedin, moving Bailey to third. Bryce Lane and Jiovanni Mier walked to force home a run, and Enrique Hernandez followed with a two-run single to give the Legends a 7-2 lead.
A double by Slade Heathcott and a single by Castro produced a Charleston run in the fifth. The Legends added one in the bottom of the sixth. Mier reached when his pop fly fell untouched along the left field line. Pitcher Manny Barreda threw wildly on a pickoff attempt, sending Mier to third, from where he scored on a double by Chris Wallace. Back-to-back doubles by Eduardo Sosa and Heathcott made the score 8-4 in the seventh.
The Legends put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. A base hit by Lane, and walks to Hernandez and Wallace loaded the bases, and Kvasnicka cleared them with a three-run double down the left field line. Kvasnicka went to third after a fly to center by Medrano, and scored on a single by Adamson to leave the final margin at 12-4. The Legends and RiverDogs split the season-opening four game series. Lexington remains at home to open a four-game series with the Hagerstown Suns and 2010 top overall draft choice Bryce Harper. First pitch Monday night is set for 7:05 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
