Lexington Legends News Release
(CHARLESTON, S.C.) Lexington pitchers Pedro Fernandez, Torey Deshazier and Zach Lovvorn combined for 15 strikeouts and one walk, and the Legends broke up a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning on their way to a 3-2 season-opening win over the Charleston RiverDogs Thursday night. A crowd of 7,796 at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park included actor Bill Murray, a part owner of the RiverDogs.
Lexington's Brandon Downes led off the fifth inning with a double to left field. He scored on a base hit by Wander Franco, who took second on a throw home. After Chad Johnson singled Franco to third, Carlos Garcia grounded a single to left field, scoring Franco and sending Johnson to second. Alfredo Escalera followed with a base hit, and Johnson scored on an error by right fielder Austin Aune, giving the Legends a 3-0 lead.
Fernandez, the Legends' starter, pitched four and one-third scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, struck out eight batters and walked one.
Charleston got on the board in the seventh against Deshazier. Connor Spencer led off with a single and moved to third on a one-out single by Aune. A bunt hit by Katoh brought Spencer home with Charleston's first run. A balk moved the runners to second and third, and Allen Valerio's single scored Aune to cut the lead to one at 3-2. Katoh was thrown out at third on the play, and Valerio was then thrown out at home after shortstop Humberto Arteaga had committed an error on a ball hit by Alvaro Noriega.
Johnson had two hits in four at bats for Lexington. In addition to his double, Downes, the left fielder, had an assist and made an outstanding catch on a foul fly ball to end the Charleston sixth.
Deshazier (1-0) got the win. He worked three and two-thirds innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs. He struck out five batters and walked none. Zach Lovvorn pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts and picked up his first save.
Charleston starter Jordan Foley (0-1) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends and RiverDogs will play game two of the four-game series Friday at 7:05 p.m.
