Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (0-1) began their South Atlantic League Northern Division title defense on Thursday night with a 5-2 setback against the Hickory Crawdads (1-0). The Crawdads held the Suns scoreless over the final five frames to seal the opening night win.

It was a two-run third inning that tipped the scales in favor of Hickory. Tied 1-1 entering the frame, the first batter of the inning, CF Jose Cardona, reached on a throwing error by Suns SS David Masters. Cardona stole second and then moved to third on a line drive single to right by SS Michael De Leon. A sacrifice fly to center field by 1B Ronald Guzman drove Cardona home to put the Crawdads ahead 2-1. The next batter, 2B Travis Demeritte, doubled home De Leon to put the Crawdads ahead for good 3-1.

The Suns were limited to just three hits in the game, but two of those hits were solo shots. First baseman Jose Marmolejos hit the first Suns homerun of 2015 in the top of the second to lead off the frame. The other dinger belonged to CF Dale Carey in the fourth and brought Hagerstown within one, 3-2.

Designated hitter Eduard Pinto made sure that was as close as the Suns would get in the 6th as he roped a line drive single to right to increase the Crawdads lead to 4-2. The final insurance run crossed the plate in the eighth. Left fielder Luke Tendler began that frame with a double, and he wound up scoring when catcher Jose Trevino reached on a fielder's choice. The Crawdads totaled 10 hits in the game, including four doubles.

Six of those 10 hits were surrendered by RHP Austen Williams (0-1), who got the start and suffered the loss for the Suns. Williams went four innings in his Suns debut, allowing three runs (one earned) while striking out two. RHP Ariel Jurado (1-0) picked up the win for Hickory. He started and pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out eight. Three Hickory pitchers combined to keep the Suns hitless after Jurado exited the game, with RHP John Fasola earning the save.

These two teams will battle again Friday night in Hickory when the Suns will send LHP Connor Bach (0-0) to the mound for his first start of the season. He will square off against RHP Luis Ortiz (0-0) for the Crawdads. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
