Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- Tourists starting pitcher Zach Jemiola picked up right where he left off last season by leading the Tourists to a 2015 Opening Day victory; a 4-3 win over the Rome Braves on Thursday night. Asheville only needed five hits as their pitching quieted the Braves offense and the Opening Day Braves crowd.

Jemiola's most recent outing in a Tourists uniform came in Game 3 of the SAL Championship Series in 2014. The right-hander led Asheville to a win that night and followed it up with a six-inning, two-hit, seven-strikeout performance on this occasion. James Lomangino spelled the Tourists starter with two quality innings of relief before Josh Michalec notched the save by working a scoreless ninth.

Both offenses were quiet early. It wasn't until the top of the fourth when Asheville recorded their first hit; a solo Home Run to left by outfielder Drew Weeks. The Tourists added two more in the top of the fifth. Yonathan Daza singled to right, took second on a fielding error by Braxton Davidson, went to third on an errant throw by Davidson, then scored on Omar Carrizales' bunt single. Carrizales later scored on a Wes Rogers RBI single. The Braves committed three errors in the inning.

Davidson put the Braves on the board with a Home Run in the bottom of the fifth. Rome later added an unearned run in the frame to cut Asheville's lead to one. First-baseman Henry Garcia had an answer for the Tourists and connected with an RBI single in the sixth to plate Kevin Padlo.

Rome managed to plate one in the eighth but came up short in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and Davidson representing the tying run at second, Omar Obregon hit an infield single to first. Garcia caught Davidson overrunning the bag at third and threw across the diamond. Padlo then chased Davidson towards home plate and applied the tag for the game's final out.

Max Povse pitched five innings and allowed three runs for Rome in a losing effort. The win is Tourists skipper Warren Schaeffer's first ever as a professional manager.

Asheville and Rome are back in action Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm.
