Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (April 9, 2015) - The Lakewood BlueClaws celebrated a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, beating the Kannapolis Intimidators, 2-1, on Opening Night. Jordan Guerrero spun 6.0 scoreless innings, but the Intimidators (0-1) couldn't provide their starting pitcher with any run support on a chilly night at FirstEnergy Park.
Carlos Tocci stepped to the plate with runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, and drove his third hit of the game up the middle, scoring Gremmy Cumana for the game-winning run. Tocci finished Opening Day 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and run scored.
Guerrero kept the BlueClaws (1-0) at bay over six scoreless inning. The Intimidators starting pitcher matched his career-high with six strikeouts over a career-long 6.0 inning outing, limiting the BlueClaws to two hits and a walk.
Kannapolis broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning. Brett Austin drew a leadoff walk from reliever Austin Davis, moved to second base on a Louie Lechich sac-bunt, and advanced to third on Nolan Earley's base hit. With men on the corners and two outs, Austin scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
Lakewood evened the game, 1-1, in the home half of the inning when Brad Salgado balked in Tocci, who doubled earlier in the frame.
The Intimidators loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning thanks to a Christrian Stringer single, a Lakewood error, and a walk, but the reliever Davis buckled down to retired Lechich, leaving the bases loaded.
Lakewood starter Richardo Pinto kept the Intimidators off the scoreboard through six innings. He scattered three hits while striking out two and walking two.
The Intimidators continue this 4-game series against the BlueClaws on Friday at 7:05 p.m. when RHP Spencer Adams makes his Class A debut against faces Lakewood's LHP Josh Taylor. The Intimidators are on a 7-game road trip to open the 2015 season before playing their home opener on Thursday, April 16, at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
