Drive Walk off with Win in Season Opener
April 9, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive kicked off their 10th Anniversary season at Fluor Field in exciting fashion on Thursday night, as Michael Chavis smacked a walk-off double off the Green Monster in left field to give the Drive a 3-2 victory in front of 6,215 fans, the second largest crowd for a home opener in franchise history.
The ninth-inning rally started when Nick Longhi grounded a hard single up the middle with one out. He moved up to second on a Rafael Devers groundout, and Chavis followed by delivering the winning blow against Connor Kaden (1-0).
Chavis's big night began in the bottom of the seventh when he crushed a Carlos Diaz offering to a third-story balcony in left-center field for a game-tying solo homer.
In addition to Chavis's heroics, the effort by the Drive pitching staff was nothing short of outstanding, combining for 15 strikeouts with only one walk.
Opening Night starter Ty Buttrey, a returner from the 2014 club, showed off good velocity and allowed one earned run in four innings while punching out eight GreenJackets hitters. Aaron Wilkerson followed with three shutout innings and five strikeouts, and Mario Alcantara (1-0), another returning pitcher from the 2014 Drive, got the win with a pair of shutout frames.
The GreenJackets scored single runs against Buttrey in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Jeremy Sy delivered an RBI single in the third inning, and John Riley tripled home a run in the fourth.
Devers drove home the Drive's first run of the season with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly.
Deiner Lopez and Derek Miller joined Chavis with two-hit nights for Greenville. Sy and Andrew Cain each collected a pair of hits for Augusta.
Game two of the four-game series begins at 7:05 on Friday night at Fluor Field. RH Jamie Callahan starts on the mound for the Drive, and RH Michael Santos will throw for the GreenJackets.
