Daniel Adamson had four hits, and Adam Bailey and Chris Wallace homered as the Lexington Legends got their first win of the 2011 season, an 11-7 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The teams combined for 26 hits and six home runs, and Charleston pitchers threw five wild pitches.
The RiverDogs hit four homers, two by Slade Heathcott, who led off the game with his first of the year. Lexington tied the game on Bailey's solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the second. Adamson followed Bailey's homer with a single, the first of Adamson's four hits in the game. He came around to score on a double by Bryce Lane to put Lexington in front 2-1.
Charleston regained the lead in the third on a two-run homer by J.R. Murphy, but Wallace tied it again with a solo shot in the bottom of the third.
The Legends broke the 3-3 tie with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Adamson led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Lane. A passed ball sent Adamson to third. Delino DeShields Jr. popped out, but Jiovanni Mier walked and Enrique Hernandez singled to score Adamson. After Wilton Rodriguez relieved Charleston starter Nik Turley, Wallace walked to load the bases. Mike Kwasnicka's single scored two runs. Jhonny Medrano followed with a single to score Wallace, and Kvasnicka scored when Heathcott, the center fielder, threw the ball past third for an error, giving the Legends an 8-3 lead.
Heathcott hit his second home run in the fifth inning, and Kelvin De Leon homered for Charleston in the seventh, closing the gap to 8-5.
The Legends added three runs in the bottom of the seventh. A single by Adamson, a walk to Lane, a throwing error by pitcher Richard Martinez on a pickoff attempt at second, and a base hit by DeShields made it 9-5. A wild pitch brought Lane in from third and sent DeShields to second, from where he scored on two more wild pitches by Martinez.
Charleston added single runs in the eighth and ninth to close out the scoring. Tanner Bushue (1-0) pitched the first six innings to pick up the victory. Turley (0-1) took the loss. The series continues Saturday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
