LEXINGTON, Ky. - Slade Heathcott went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI, but Lexington plated five runs in the fourth inning to score an 11-7 win over the RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Friday night.
Heathcott, the Yankees first round pick in 2009, opened the first inning with his first career leadoff home run over the right-field fence off Lexington starter Tanner Bushue, staking Charleston to 1-0 lead.
Lexington snatched a 2-1 lead against Charleston starter Nik Turley in the second on three straight two-out hits. Adam Bailey cranked his first home run of the year to tie the score at 1-1, while Daniel Adamson singled and then scored on an RBI double by Bryce Lane.
J.R. Murphy gave the lead back to the RiverDogs with his first circuit clout of the year, a two-run bomb with two outs in the third, for a 3-2 Charleston cushion.
Chris Wallace retied the game at 3-3 for the Legends in the bottom half with a two-out solo home run to left-centerfield.
Lexington erupted for five two-out runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead. Enrique Hernandez, Mike Kvasnicka and Jhonny Medrano all contributed RBI singles in the frame.
Turley (0-1) lasted just 3.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Heathcott registered his first career multi-home run game with a solo shot in the fifth inning to trim the Lexington lead to 8-4.
Bushue (1-0) worked 6.0 innings to get the win, permitting four runs on five hits - three of which were home runs -- while walking none and fanning three.
Kelvin De Leon inched Charleston closer with a solo home run in the seventh against reliever David Martinez, making the score 8-5.
Three more runs were tacked on in the seventh for the Legends to put the affair out of reach, growing the lead to 11-5. Bryce Lane scored on a wild pitch by Richard Martinez, Delino DeShields stroked a RBI single and then scored on another wild pitch.
Charleston pushed an unearned run across in the eighth to cut the game to 11-6, when Ramon Flores reached on an error to score Murphy from third.
Heathcott's sacrifice fly in the ninth inched Charleston to 11-7, but infielder-turned-close Jorge De Leon wrapped it up for Lexington to even the series.
Daniel Adamson paced Lexington's 16-hit attack going 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Eight of the Legends nine starters had hits, and seven had multi-hit games.
Game three of this series begins at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, with RiverDogs right-hander Mikey O'Brien (0-0, 0.00 ERA) making his SAL debut against veteran Legends southpaw Brad Dydalewicz (0-0), who has seen time with Lexington in 2009 and 2010.
