Texas Legends News Release
Frisco, TX (March 9, 2011) - Despite a strong performance from Sean Williams, the Texas Legends fell 99-96 to the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Wednesday night at HP Court inside Dr Pepper Arena.
After the Legends jumped out to a 7-2 lead, the Skyforce responded with a 13-1 run to take a seven-point lead. Texas was able to crawl back and went into the second quarter trailing by one, 23-22.
Despite trailing by as many as nine points in the second, the Legends went into the break down 50-46.
Sean Williams had a dominant first half with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Joe Alexander had a 12-point opening half for Texas. Raymond Sykes led the Skyforce in the first half with 13 points.
The Legends came out strong in the second half and turned the game around in the third quarter outscoring Sioux Falls 32-16 in the period.
Texas went on a 16-4 run to start the third and regain an eight-point lead. The Legends then ended the period on a 9-2 sprint to stretch their lead to 12, going into the final quarter on top 78-66.
However, the Skyforce came roaring back at the end of the fourth quarter. With Texas leading 90-81, Sioux Falls went on a 12-3 run over the final three minutes led by newcomer Stephen McDowell. After knocking down a three-pointer to tie the game at 91, his rainbow floater in the lane with 5.3 seconds left gave the Skyforce a 93-91 lead.
On the ensuing possession though, following a Sean Williams missed hook shot, Chris Roberts, in his first game with the Legends, gathered the rebound and nailed a fade away jumper at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Trailing by two in the extra session, Joe Alexander dropped in a driving lay up while drawing a foul. He hit the free throw to put Texas up by one. Then Sioux Falls' Chris McCray dropped in a put-back lay up to give the Skyforce the lead back.
An Alexander turnover on the offensive end gave Sioux Falls the ball back. McCray hit two clutch free throws to extend the Skyforce lead to three with 3.4 seconds left.
With a chance to send the game to double overtime, Alexander's three-point attempt fell short sealing just the Skyforce's eighth win all season.
Williams finished with a game-high 27 points and 11 boards, while Alexander delivered his 20th double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Sykes and Keaton Grant led Sioux Falls with 19 points each.
The Legends fell to 18-22 on the season, while the Skyforce improved to 8-31.
Texas will be back in action on Friday night for the first of back-to-back games with the Austin Toros. The tip-off at HP Court inside Dr Pepper Arena is set for 7:00 PM. The Legends will also host the Toros on Saturday night at 7:00 PM.
