Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends came back from an early two-run deficit to defeat the West Virginia Power 6-3 at Applebee's Park Wednesday.
The Power scored single runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Legends starter Robby Donovan recovered and shut out the Power from that point until he was relieved by Arcenio Leon at the start of the seventh inning.
The Legends evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. A single by J.D. Martinez and a one-out double by Jake Goebbert produced one run, and Jonathan Meyer, who had three hits in the game, followed with a single to score Goebbert with the tying run.
:Lexington took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth. Jose Altuve led off with a double, and moved to third on a single by Miguel Arrendell. Arrendell stole second, and when catcher Patrick Irvine's throw went into center field for an error, Altuve scored. Arrendell went to third on the play, and scored when center fielder Evan Chambers' throw went into the seats behind third base, giving Lexington a 4-2 lead.. Martinez singled, advanced to second when Goebbert was hit by a pitch, and scored on Meyer's single to make the score 5-2.
In the top of the eighth, West Virginia's Aaron Baker doubled and scored on two infield outs to cut the lead to 5-3. With two outs, the game was delayed by rain for 39 minutes. When play resumed, Kirk Clark replaced Leon, and J.D. Martinez made a diving catch near the foul line in right field on a ball hit by Irvine to end the inning.
Altuve's solo homer in the bottom of the eighth restored the Legends' three-run margin.
Clark retired the side in order in the ninth and earned his ninth save.
Donovan (5-4) got the win, his fourth in his last five decisions. West Virginia starter Brandon Holden (0-4) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends and Power will play again Thursday night at Applebee's Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
