CHARLESTON, SC - After trading tallies throughout the ballgame, the Charleston RiverDogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Hickory Crawdads, 5-4, before 2,319 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday night. The Crawdads remain in first place in the Northern Division with a two game lead over the Lakewood BlueClaws.
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the 10th, 3B Hector Rabago led off with a walk against RHP Kyle Ocampo (2-1, 4.71 ERA) and was replaced on the basepaths by pinch-runner Emerson Landoni. 2B Kelvin Castro followed with a double to left to put runners at second and third with none out. Ocampo then walked LF Ray Kruml to allow for the force out at any base, but CF Slade Heathcott nixed that plan, smacking a walk-off single to center, scoring Landoni for the winning run, 5-4.
Hickory (33-21) had a scoring chance in the top of the ninth with runners at second and third with two outs, but 1B Mike Ortiz grounded to first to end the threat.
The 'Dads got on the board first against Charleston starter RHP Sean Black in the top of the first. SS Leury Garcia reached on an infield single to third, and advanced to second on an errant throw by Rabago on the play. RF Jared Prince bunted Garcia over to third before DH Miguel Velazquez hit a sac fly to right-center to bring in Garcia for a 1-0 'Dads lead.
The RiverDogs (23-30) answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Rabago led the inning off with a single to left and scored on a triple to right-center by Castro. Kruml followed with a second-straight triple down the left field line to plate Castro. An RBI groundout by DH JR Murphy drove in Kruml and put Charleston ahead, 3-1.
The Crawdads tied the game up in the top of the fourth. DH Miguel Velazquez led the inning off with his 10th homer of the season to left field. C Zach Zaneski then doubled to right and scored on a grounder to short by 3B Matt West and throwing error by SS Jimmy Paredes on the play, making it a 3-3 ballgame.
Charleston tacked on another run in the sixth. Paredes singled to center and stole second with two outs in the inning and was driven in on a single to left by 1B Luke Murton, who was thrown out at second trying for a double to end the rally.
Hickory responded again in the top of the seventh to tie the game at four. 2B Travis Adair doubled to right, advanced to third on a sac bunt by Garcia, and scored on a sac fly by Prince.
Ocampo picked up the loss for Hickory, allowing the winning run on two hits and two walks without recording an out in the 10th. Reliever RHP Ryan Flannery (3-2, 2.70 ERA) recorded the win for the RiverDogs, dealing three scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts.
