(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Humberto Arteaga had two doubles and a triple and drove in two runs as the Lexington Legends held on for a 6-4 win over the Charleston RiverDogs Thursday night in front of 5,042 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The RiverDogs built an early 3-0 lead. They scored a run in the first inning on a single by Michael O'Neill, a walk to Tyler Wade and a double by Aaron Judge. Judge's sacrifice fly produced a run in the third inning, and a home run by Eduardo de Oleo in the fifth put the RiverDogs up by three.
Charleston starter Brady Lail pitched six shutout innings and allowed only three hits, but the Legends got started quickly against reliever Rony Bautista in the seventh. Elier Hernandez led off with a double, and Chad Johnson walked. Arteaga doubled to left field, scoring Hernandez. Johnson went to third on Arteaga's hit, and then scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to one at 3-2. Fred Ford followed with a home run to right center field, putting the Legends in front 4-3. After Angel Rincon relieved Bautista, Kevin Kuntz reached second on a throwing error by Wade, the shortstop. Kuntz went to third on Alfredo Escalera's ground out and scored on a single by Dominique Taylor.
Singles by Wade, Judge and Reymon Nunez produced a run for Charleston in the eighth, but the Legends responded in the bottom of the eighth when Arteaga tripled in Johnson, who had reached on an error.
Legends reliever Jose Rodriguez walked three men in the ninth, but struck out Judge with the bases loaded to end the game.
Tripp Davis (2-0), who relieved starter Matt Tenuta with one out in the seventh inning, got the win. Rodriguez, who entered the game at the start of the eighth, picked up his fourth save.
Game two of the four-game series will be played Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The Legends encourage fans to wear red for "Go Red" night in support of the American Heart Association.
