Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads came up with the big hit, escaped the dangerous inning, pulled a few rabbits out of the hat, and in the end found a way to win each of their last 12-straight games, but the franchise record winning streak came to an end Thursday night as the 'Dads fell to the Lakewood BlueClaws 3-1 at FirstEnergy Park.
The 'Dads bats battled the drizzling rain all night while being held to one run on six hits, marking the first time the club was held under four runs since scoring three in a win over Charleston on June 4th. The lack of offense squandered a complete game outing by Crawdads starter Kevin Pucetas, who held the BlueClaws to three runs on 10 hits over 8 innings.
The 'Claws jumped on Pucetas and the 'Dads early, with two runs on three hits in the 1st for a 2-0 lead. The Crawdads responded with a run in the 2nd, as Ronald Guzman led off the frame with a single before coming in two batters later on a RBI base knock by Jairo Beras to make the score 2-1.
That would be the last run of the game for Hickory, as the 'Dads got doubles in each of the 5th, 6th, and 8th frames but were unable to bring in the runner. Lakewood capped the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the 5th for the final 3-1 score.
Ryan Cordell, Nomar Mazara, and Janluis Castro all ended the night 1-4 with a double, while Beras went 1-4 with a RBI.
Pucetas (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the 'Dads, while Lakewood starter Jon Prosinski (2-0) earned the win after holding Hickory to one run on five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts over six innings pitched. BlueClaws reliever Ulises Joaquin (5) earned the save with two scoreless innings out of the pen.
The Crawdads (38-28) will look to start a new winning streak in game two against the BlueClaws (27-39) Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
