Asheville Tourists News Release

Asheville, NC-- The Asheville Tourists scored a season high 17 runs in Thursday night's series opener at McCormick Field against the Rome Braves. The offensive highlights were numerous but several unorthodox plays took place; most of which benefitted the Tourists. Rome had a runner called out for runner's interference and the Braves also had a call reversed that sent hitting coach Bobby Moore to the clubhouse after arguing the call.

As far as the Tourists were concerned, this was a night where the bats came alive and starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela battled through five innings to run his record on the season to 7-1. Asheville fell behind 3-0 after the top of the second, but the home team responded with three runs in the bottom half to tie the game. Jordan Patterson laced a two run double to left-center and Alec Mehrten doubled home Patterson with a rocket down the third base line.

After Rome took a 4-3 lead with an unearned run in the third, the Tourists again answered in the bottom of the inning. Correlle Prime hit one of his three doubles on the night to score Raimel Tapia and then Jose Briceno put the Tourists in front with a two-run Home Run down the left field line.

Tapia broke the game open with a Grand Slam in the fourth. Already ahead 10-4, Emerson Jimenez made it a six run inning with a two run single off Tyler Vail. The Braves plated two in the top of the fifth, but that would be all the Tourists pitching staff would allow. Matt Pierpont worked two shutout innings while Jefri Hernandez and Dylan Stamey each tossed a one, two, three frame.

Asheville wasn't done at the plate; however, as the team rallied for five additional runs in the sixth. Mehrten came up with the bases loaded and nearly had himself a Grand Slam. The ball hit the top of the wall in left-center and resulted in a two-run double. Jimenez followed with another near Home Run to right-center, but the 42 foot high scoreboard just kept the ball in play which plated two more. Tapia added an RBI single to conclude the scoring.

Every Tourist in the lineup scored at least one run and Asheville ran their home winning streak to four straight. David Dahl extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth. Dahl has reached base in 23 straight home games. The same two teams are back at it Friday night with the first pitch set for 7:05pm.
