Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Right fielder Julio Martinez went 4-for-4 with a double and home run as the Lexington Legends collared the Charleston RiverDogs, 7-2, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 6,567 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory the Legends captured their first win of the season and balance their record to 1-1, while the RiverDogs slipped to 1-1. The 6,567 fans in attendance represented the second sellout in as many nights.
The Legends lit the scoreboard in the first inning when Jose Altuve singled, stole second, moved to third on Aaron Bray's flyout and scored on Jiovanni Mier's RBI single to take a quick 1-0 lead.
Lexington cruised until Charleston knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth when Kyle Higashioka doubled off starter Juan Minaya, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Garrison Lassiter's RBI fielder's choice. Minaya lasted just 3.1 innings allowing a single run on three hits while walking five and sinking three
Lexington reliever Arcenio Leon (1-0) kept Charleston off the board in relief of Minaya over 3.1 innings, surrendering just one hit with two walks and four punchouts.
The visitors took a 4-1 lead in the fifth with three runs. Altuve reached on a Rob Lyerly error, Bray followed with a base on balls, and Altuve scored on Mier's fielder's choice. Mier then plated the Legends' third run when Martinez blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall on the first pitch he saw from Charleston starter Graham Stoneburner (0-1).
Ben Watkins relieved Stoneburner and quelled the rally after Martinez's homer. Stoneburner, a former Clemson standout making his Charleston debut, went 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out seven and walked a pair.
The Legends posted three more runs in the seventh, taking a 5-1 advantage on a RBI single by Jake Goebbert and extending the lead to 7-1 later in the frame, when Kody Hinze drew a bases-loaded walk, and Rene Garcia followed with a run-scoring single.
Game 3 of this four-game series is set for Saturday at 7:05 pm, with Charleston sending right-hander Sean Black (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound while right-hander Robert Donovan (0-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the rubber for Lexington.
