Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns battled through the winds and the cold but fell to the Hickory Crawdads 7-2 on Friday night.

Both sides got on the board in the third inning. After Hickory second baseman Edwin Garcia hit a single to leftfield with a man on second and one out, a throwing error by left fielder JP Ramirez allowed Ed Koncel to score.

The Suns responded in the bottom half of the inning as Marcus Jones singled to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error by Hickory right fielder Miguel Velasquez. Jones later scored on a single up the middle by catcher Sandy Leon.

The Crawdads took control in the fourth off the bat of Matt West, who with two on hit his first home run of the season to straight-away center off Suns southpaw Josh Smoker (0-1) to put Hickory up 4-1.

Hickory was led by the strong starting pitching of Robbie Ross (1-0), who allowed only one unearned run and struck out four in five innings of work.

Smoker took the loss with four runs (three earned) allowed, but struck out seven. Colten Willems came on to relieve Smoker in the fifth inning and allowed three runs in four innings of work, while striking out five and issuing two walks.

Wanel Vasquez made his Suns debut, working a scoreless ninth inning.

Both teams are now 1-1 on the season, and game three of the four-game series will be Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Gates open at Municipal Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
