Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Colombian top prospect Julio Teheran showed the fans at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium why there is so much hype surrounding the right-hander on Opening Day 2010. After a day of rain, the Kannapolis Intimidators (0-2) were washed out by the pitching of the Rome Braves, as the Braves (2-0) swept a two game doubleheader.
In game one Teheran (1-0) used his fastball and change of speeds to keep the Intimidators hitters off balance and off the scoreboard. Teheran went six innings allowing just a single to Miguel Gonzalez and a double to Ian Gac. He struck out seven and walked one. Chris Masters threw a clean seventh inning.
Joe Serafin (0-1) went six relatively strong innings in the loss as he allowed seven hits and did not surrender a walk. Serafin ran into trouble in both the fourth and sixth, allowing two runs in each inning. The big hit of the game was a 2-run home run off the bat of Christian Bethancourt in the sixth inning. Rome won the contest 4-0.
In game two it was more of the same from the Braves as they used dominant pitching to baffle the Intimidators. Ryan Weber, who was not slated to start until last night, didn't allow a baserunner until one out in the fourth when Kyle Colligan doubled to left. Weber retired 10 with groundballs and three with strikeouts. Luis Avilan (1-0) picked up the win, going 1.2 in relief, striking out two. Tyrelle Harris, despite allowing a lead-off walk, picked up the save in the ninth inning.
Terry Doyle (0-1) started the game for the Intimidators and is a tough-luck loser in his debut. Doyle allowed a first inning run but danced around baserunners in six strong innings. Doyle struck out seven and walked two, two of his seven strikeouts came in an inning where he loaded the bases with no outs and worked out of the jam. Kyle Bellamy worked a clean seventh inning, he recorded a strikeout.
The Intimidators had just three hits and did not score in 14 innings. Rome pitched racked up 17 strikeouts on the day.
The next game will be on Saturday, April 10th, at 7:05 pm. Cameron Bayne and Brett Oberholtzer will make their 2010 debuts.
