Jackets Take Two from Hoppers

Augusta, GA - After starting the last two seasons with three straight losses, the Augusta GreenJackets started 2010 in stride by picking up a pair of season-opening wins. The Jackets earned a 7-3 win in the completion of a suspended game from Thursday before downing Greensboro 5-2 in the regularly scheduled affair.

In the first game, Tommy Joseph stole the show in his professional debut with a 3-4 effort, including a three-run seventh inning home run that put the contest on ice for the GreenJackets. Ryan Lollis also contributed a 2-3 night with a double and a triple while Chris Dominguez knocked in a run with a double as well.

The other story of the opener was the debut of Chris Heston, who fired four innings of one-hit baseball, retiring the game's first ten hitters and striking out four. Jose Valdez delivered a solid effort out of the bullpen, keeping the Hoppers scoreless through 2.2 hitless innings with three strikeouts.

Bryan Irving (1-0) threw 1.2 innings for the win to follow Heston while Greensboro starter Matt Montgomery was tagged with the loss.

In the nightcap, a pair of Ryan Cavan singles lifted the Jackets to a 2-1 advantage through six innings when the floodgates burst for Augusta in the seventh. Juan Martinez's solo home run sparked a three-run frame that saw Nick Liles and Tommy Joseph contribute RBI hits.

Jorge Bucardo tossed four innings in his first start of the year, limiting the Grasshoppers to one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Chad James, the Florida Marlins 1st round pick in the 2009 draft, was making his professional debut in the nightcap and took a no-decision as well. James allowing one run on three hits in 4.1 solid innings.

Devan Kline (1-0) threw two scoreless innings of one-hit baseball to earn the win for the Jackets while Sandy Rosario (0-1) took the loss for the Hoppers out of the bullpen.

Bryan Salsbury will get the nod on the mound for the Jackets in the third game of the series and will face fellow righty Errick Carillo. First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
