Shorebirds earn first win of season

Greenville, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds shutout the Greenville Drive from the fifth inning forward en route to a 4-2 win at Fluor Field. The Delmarva Shorebirds earned the 995th win in the 15 year history of the franchise.

For a second night in a row, the Shorebirds scored the game's first run. T.J Baxter led off the game by drawing a walk. Tyler Kelly then dropped a bunt and pitcher Drake Britton threw wild to first, which allowed Baxter to advance to third and Kelly to second. Then, Levi Carolus roped a double into the right center field gap to score both runners to give the ‘Birds a 2-0 edge.

The Drive responded immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Shorebirds starter Jake Cowan issued three straight walks to load the bases. Shannon Wilkerson then grounded into a fielder's choice, which allowed Wilfredo Pichardo to score from third.

The ‘Birds stretched the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning. Steve Bumbry set the table with a triple down the right field line. Michael Ohlman followed with a sacrifice liner to right field that scored Bumbry.

Greenville again had an immediate response in the home half of the fourth. Shannon Wilkerson hit a one out triple and scored on a ground out by Raymond Fuentes.

The Shorebirds padded their lead in the top of the eighth inning. Mikey Planeta led off with a single up the middle. Two batters later, he scored on a sharp triple into the right center field gap by Brumby to give the ‘Birds a 4-2 lead.

Four Shorebirds pitchers combined to keep the Drive offense on neutral. Starter Jake Cowan tossed four innings, allowing just two hits and two runs. Jake Smith came on the fifth inning and earned the win in three shutout frames. James Brandhorst tossed a scoreless eighth inning, while Josh Dowdy picked up the save by throwing a scoreless ninth.

The Shorebirds play game three of the series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Matt Hobgood makes his first start of the season for the Shorebirds.
