Minnesota Ripknees News Release

St. Paul, Minn. The ABA Minnesota Ripknees led for nearly the entire contest as they coasted to a 106-93 victory over the Detroit Panthers on Wednesday evening at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University-St. Paul. Minnesota was led by former Winona State all-conference forward Travis Leech's double-double, socring 22 points with 12 rebounds.

The Ripknees had four players account for 76 of their points as former Minnesota Mr. Basketball Mitch Ohnstead (U of Minnesota) put in 21 points and dished out a game high nine assists. He also had one of the biggest shots of the game, a four-pointer on a 3-D attempt at the first quarter buzzer that put the Ripknees up 34-20. Leech wasn't the only Ripknee to put up a double-double as their leading scorer of the season, ABA All-Star Jamel Staten added 15 points and 13 rebounds. Former Minneapolis Henry prep star Johnnie Gilbert rounded out the foursome with 18 points and 8 rebounds.

The Ripknees led by as much as 20 points in the game midway through the fourth quarter and didn't allow Detroit to lead by more than one, an early 11-10 lead just five minutes into the game.

The 13th Man for the game, actually a female for the first time this season, was DJ Anjeli "The Queen Bee" from local radio station B96 in the Twin Cities. She did not see action in the contest, but was in uniform for Minnesota. The Ripknees and Panthers square off against tonight at the Gangelhoff Center at 705pm.
