"Learn to Play Hockey" puts kids on ice

October 23, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

The Memphis Youth Hockey League just finished its free Learn to Play Hockey program at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Approximately 65 new kids participated on the ice this year, with their ages ranging from three years to 17. The MYHL provided them with the protective equipment and sticks, while Hernando Youth Sports provided them with hockey skates.

"This is the third season the MYHL has offered the free Learn to Play Hockey program, and it was, by far, the biggest turnout we have had," said MYHL Recreation League Director Jack Rogers.

Each child spent a pair of weekends on the ice, learning basic skating and hockey skills from MYHL players and coaches. On the program's last day, though, several RiverKings players worked with the kids on the ice and signed their sticks.

Registration for the youth ice hockey league will continue through November 1. For more information, E-mail Rogers at jcrogers@bellsouth.net, or call (662) 280-5895.
