Sundogs Open 2007-08 Season with Two Wins against Defending CHL Champs
October 23, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release
After spending the first three weeks of the 2006-07 season on the road, the Arizona Sundogs opened the 2007-08 season at home Friday and Saturday night against the defending CHL President's Cup Champion Colorado Eagles. In Friday night's contest Arizona skated away with a 6-5 shootout win. The Sundogs followed the previous night's shootout win with another offensive showing on Saturday with a 7-6 victory.
The two teams battled back and forth Friday night through three 20-minute periods, a five-minute overtime period and nine rounds of a sudden-death shootout before Arizona grabbed the win.
The first period saw both teams collect two goals each but in the second Colorado tallied the period's two lone goals to take a 4-2 lead into the third. Arizona fought back though to force an overtime session that would see them down a man for two minutes. Sundogs rookie netminder Bill Zaniboni, in his first professional game, stood on his head making big save after big save to force the shootout session. Coyotes prospect Sean Sullivan notched the game winner beating Colorado goalie Clayton Pool in the ninth round of the shootout.
The two teams once again put on an offensive showcase Saturday night, combining for 13 goals. Olivier Latendresse helped the Sundogs to their second win with a four point performance while rookie goaltender Bill Zaniboni deflected 40 shots to secure the 7-6 victory.
The first period looked much like Friday night's opening frame as both clubs traded a pair of goals early. Looking to take a lead into the locker room, Arizona's Mark Kolanos found the back of the net with less than two minutes to play in the period.
Continuing the back and forth battle, both clubs exchanged three goals in the second period. Scoring slowed in the third as each team tallied just one marker. The difference maker in the final stanza went to yet another Coyotes prospect in Olivier Latendresse. On passes from Mark Kolanos and Dan Laperriere, Latendresse notched his second goal and forth point of the night to give Arizona its second straight win at home in the young 2007-08 CHL season.
