DES MOINES, IA, Jan. 17, 2010 - The Iowa Energy opened up a 31 point lead over the Albuquerque Thunderbirds before coasting to a 100-85 win Sunday in Des Moines. The win moves Iowa to a league best 18-5 record on the season.
Iowa jumped on the Thunderbirds early as Energy guard Curtis Stinson scored eight points in the first quarter to give the home team a 30-16 lead. Iowa extended their lead to 17 at the half and put Albuquerque away in the third quarter. Energy guard Jeff Trepagnier scored 13 of his game high 27 points in the third as Iowa led by 30 points heading into the final quarter.
Energy Head Coach Nick Nurse played his reserves most of the fourth quarter as Albuquerque narrowed the lead to fifteen points.
Iowa finished with a season high 21 steals in the game as Trepagnier and Othyus Jeffers finished with 6 steals each. Stinson finished with 16 points and 7 assists in the win.
Albuquerque was led by Carlos Powell's 24 points while Kevin Pittsnogle finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The loss drops the Thunderbirds to 9-11 on the season.
Iowa hosts Ft. Wayne Friday and Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Saturday's game features "Benny the Bull" bobbleheads for the first 1,000 fans. "Benny" will be in attendance as the game will be aired nationally on Versus.
