66ers Come Up Short 102-97 To BayHawks

TULSA, Okla., January 17, 2010 - Mustafa Shakur had his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Moses Ehambe scored a season-high 25 points, but the Tulsa 66ers fell to the Erie BayHawks 102-97 on Sunday at the Tulsa Convention Center.

"Our effort was good and we competed tonight, but Erie made the plays down the stretch," 66ers Head Coach Nate Tibbetts said. "We will just have to get back to work."

In almost a carbon-copy of last night's game, both teams traded baskets early in the first quarter. Tied at 14 with 5:01 left in the period, the BayHawks went on a 6-0 run capped by an Alade Aminu lay-up. Another 5-0 run in the final two minutes gave the BayHawks a 29-20 edge going into the second quarter. Aminu scored 10 first quarter points, as the BayHawks shot 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) in the period, while the 66ers shot 9-for-18 (50 percent).

Two lay-ups by Jackie Manuel and Frank Tolbert boosted Erie's lead to 13 with 9:36 left in the first half. The 66ers second unit managed to hold even with the BayHawks, before a 5-0 run by Tulsa cut the lead to 49-41 with 2:02 left in the half, capped by a Chris Richard jumper and Deron Washington free throw. Tolbert scored five points in the final minutes of the half, as he led the BayHawks with 11 second quarter points, and Erie took a 56-45 advantage at the half.

The 66ers made 11 of their first 12 shots to start the third quarter, going on a 20-6 run and regaining the lead at 65-64 after a Shakur lay-up with 6:08 left in the period. Ehambe led the charge with 12 third quarter points, as the 66ers shot 70 percent from the field in the period. The BayHawks shot just 3-for-8 from the free throw line, but 50 percent from the field, as Cedric Jackson scored seven points in the quarter. Erie took a 76-74 lead into the final quarter.

Tied at 82 with 8:48 remaining in the game, three costly turnovers for Tulsa sparked a 12-3 run by the BayHawks as Aminu slammed home an alley-oop dunk to put Erie ahead 94-85 with 3:42 left in the contest. A three-pointer by Ehambe and free throws by Washington and Larry Owens cut the BayHawks lead to 94-93 with 1:34 remaining, but Erie managed to hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Led by Ehambe, the 66ers (11-9) finished with five players in double-figures scoring. Owens had 17 points and five rebounds, while Washington finished with 12 points and six boards. Marcus Lewis, in his first start of the season, scored a season-high 10 points. Latavious Williams added eight points and eight rebounds.

The BayHawks (10-12) were led by Tolbert with a team-high 25 points, while Aminu finished with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson had 20 points and eight assists, while Manuel added 17 points. John Bryant contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

The 66ers travel to the Dakotas to face the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. and the Dakota Wizards on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m., before returning home the following week. The BayHawks finish off their road trip on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Austin before returning home for a back-to-back set against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22 and 23.
